Kritiker knöpfen sich den Teflon-Kandidaten vor

Zu jung, unerfahren, alles nur ein Hype: Barack Obamas Erfolg führt in den USA zu ersten Zweifeln. Doch bisher perlt jede Kritik an Hillary Clintons Gegner ab - der Gegenwind scheint ihn nur noch stärker zu machen.

New York - Der Kandidat: ein Grünschnabel. Eine Luftnummer. Ein Mann der schönen, doch leeren Rhetorik. Charismatisch, doch zu jung, zu wenig politische Härtetests bestanden - fraglich, ob er die großen Fragen der Zeit meistern kann.

So heißt es jetzt über Barack Obama.

Der ungebrochene Erfolg des Präsidentschaftsbewerbers führt in den USA zu ersten Zweifeln: Ist der Mann wirklich geeignet? “Keine Erfahrung in der Außenpolitik, so gut wie keine in Washington” (”Time”), “Mangel an Erfahrung, Tendenz zu Ausflüchten” (”New York Times”), “unerfahren, unvorbereitet” (die politische Gegenseite).

“Mixtur aus Teflon und Feenstaub”

Sein Aufstieg, sein Status als “Phänomen” (”Washington Post”), die Reaktion der US-Massenmedien, von denen ihn manche als “Rockstar” (Fox News) anhimmeln: Immer mehr murren jetzt über den Mann, der doch tatsächlich Hillary Clinton aus dem Rennen werfen könnte.

Und trotz allem: Obama legt zu. Immer weiter. In fast allen landesweiten Umfragen hat er Hillary Clinton mittlerweile abgehängt. Es steht 54 zu 38 Prozent (CBS/”New York Times”), 51 zu 39 Prozent (Gallup/”USA Today”) respektive 46 zu 43 Prozent (AP). Auch in der jüngsten Fernsehdebatte konnte er weiter punkten, Clinton rannte ebenso frustriert wie erfolglos gegen seine Aura an.

Für sie ist es wie verhext. John Heilemann spottet im “New York Magazine”, Obama sei “beschichtet mit einer ruchlosen Mixtur aus Teflon und Feenstaub”.

Spekulationen um Dennis-Rauswurf

Abgang des McLaren-Teamchefs angeblich bereits beschlossene Sache - Mercedes wies Berichte “als reine Spekulationen” zurück

Barcelona/Stuttgart - Der Automobilhersteller Mercedes hat einen Bericht der spanischen Sportzeitung “Marca” deutlich zurückgewiesen, wonach McLaren-Mercedes-Teamchef Ron Dennis auf Druck des Unternehmens noch vor der Saison aus der Führungsriege des Formel-1-Rennstalls entlassen werden soll. “Die gemachten Ausführungen sind reine Spekulationen”, teilten die Schwaben am Mittwoch mit.

Zweieinhalb Wochen vor Saisonbeginn betonte Mercedes: “Tatsache ist, dass in unserem Formel-1-Team der bekannte Status quo existiert, und dieser bedeutet eine unveränderte Führungsmannschaft mit gleichbleibenden Zuständigkeiten.”

Kommunique in kommenden Tagen prophezeit

Die Sportzeitung hatte am Dienstag ganzseitig berichtet, dass die Entscheidung bereits getroffen sei. Das Blatt nannte aber keine Quellen für seinen Bericht. In der Öffentlichkeit solle Dennis’ vermeintlicher Rauswurf als Abschied des 60-jährigen Briten verkauft werden, orakelte “Marca”. Dennis werde in den kommenden Tagen in einem Kommunique mitteilen, dass für ihn eine “Etappe” zu Ende gehe und er McLaren verlassen werde. Mercedes werde dies “mit Bedauern” zur Kenntnis nehmen.

Nach derzeitigem Stand gehören Mercedes 40 Prozent an dem Formel-1-Team und damit so viel wie keinem anderen Mitbesitzer. Die restlichen 60 Prozent verteilen sich zu je 15 Prozent auf Ron Dennis und Mansour Ojjeh sowie 30 Prozent auf eine Investmentgesellschaft des Königreichs Bahrain.

Nachdem es im vergangenen Jahr zur Spionageaffäre um McLaren-Mercedes gekommen war, weil ein hochrangiger McLaren-Mitarbeiter geheime Unterlagen von einem Ferrari-Mechaniker angenommen hatte, hatten die Spekulationen um eine Übernahme durch Mercedes wieder Fahrt aufgenommen. In Fachkreisen gilt sie als sehr wahrscheinlich. Derzeit führt Dennis das Team zusammen mit Mercedes-Motorsportchef Norbert Haug und McLaren-Geschäftsführer Martin Whitmarsh. (APA/dpa)

Vergifteter Bürgermeister: Winzer durch DNA-Probe überführt

St. Pölten - Der im Fall Hirtzberger festgenommene Verdächtige ist nach Angaben der Polizei durch eine DNA-Probe überführt worden. Der mutmaßliche Täter befindet sich in der Justizanstalt Krems in Haft, teilte Friedrich Kutschera, Erster Staatsanwalt der Staatsanwaltschaft Krems, mit. Am Hof des Mannes laufen derzeit Untersuchungen.

Der Bürgermeister von Spitz an der Donau und Rechtsanwalt in Krems hatte ein “Mon Cherie” zusammen mit einer vorgedruckten Grußkarte an der Windschutzscheibe seines Autos gefunden. Der 55-Jährige, auch Vorsitzender des “Arbeitskreises Wachau”, dürfte die Praline kurz vor einer Fahrt nach Krems konsumiert haben. Wenig später wurde ihm im Auto übel, er hielt in Unterloiben vor dem Haus eines Freundes an. Dort stürzte er vor Passanten aus seinem Wagen.

Hirtzberger befindet sich seit 9. Februar im Krankenhaus Krems im künstlichen Tiefschlaf. Sein Zustand ist nach wie vor ernst. Für Hinweise zur Klärung der Tat sind von der Polizei bereits am vergangenen Wochenende 20.000 Euro ausgelobt worden.(APA/red)

Turkey steps up Iraq onslaught as US urges quick pull-out

ANKARA, Feb 28 (AFP) - Turkey stepped up its offensive against Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq and refused to set a pull-out timetable, despite a US warning that the incursion should last no more than “a week or two.” The military said 77 militants were killed overnight in “the heaviest clashes” since its forces rolled over the border into the snow-bound mountains of northern Iraq last week. That brought the army toll of PKK dead to 230, while its own losses climbed to 27. As fighter jets continued to pound rebel positions on the sixth full day of the incursion, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates made it clear that US support for its NATO ally was not open-ended. The offensive must end quickly, he said. “I measure quick in terms of days, or a week or two, something like that. Not months,” he said in New Delhi before flying to Ankara for talks.

Rice tells Olmert of concern about Gaza civilians

TOKYO, Feb 28 (Reuters) -

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice voiced concern about Palestinian civilians killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza. Rice, who met Olmert in Tokyo on Thursday, stopped short of an explicit call for Israel to exercise restraint in dealing with rocket attacks by Hamas. A rocket launched from the Hamas-run Gaza Strip killed a man in Israel on Wednesday, and Israeli air strikes killed six Palestinian militants and five civilians in the territory. Rice will visit Israel and the Palestinian territories next week to try to push along U.S.-brokered peace talks complicated by the growing violence.

Israel kills six Palestinians in air strikes

GAZA, Feb 28 (Reuters): Israel stepped up air strikes in the Gaza Strip Thursday, killing five Palestinian gunmen. A total of 16 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip by Israel since Wednesday. The Palestinian dead included six-month-old Mohammed al-Burai, who was killed in an air strike on the Hamas-run Interior Ministry.

Missile strike kills 13 in Pakistan tribal belt

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Feb 28 (AP): A suspected US missile strike destroyed an Al-Qaeda and Taliban hideout in a Pakistani tribal area Thursday, killing 13 alleged militants including several Arabs, security officials said. Residents of Azam Warsak village in South Waziristan told AFP that a house was blown up by a missile fired from a pilotless drone and the loud blast was heard miles away in the rugged valley. “A house used as a den by Al-Qaeda and Afghan Taliban militants was hit by a missile. Thirteen people were killed and around 10 were wounded,” a senior Pakistani security official told AFP. “There was no immediate information about the presence of any high-value target,” the official said. A security source based in Peshawar said the missile was fired by a US drone at about 2:00 am Thursday. Another security official said most of the dead were Arabs. Armed militants cordoned off the site after the missile strike, residents said. They said four unidentified “guests” had arrived late Wednesday at the destroyed house, although their identities were not known. A spokesman for the US-led coalition force based in Afghanistan said it had “no reports” that either it or the separate NATO-headed force were involved in the strike. Pakistani forces were not immediately available to comment on the incident.

Obama fights false links to Islam, denounces views of Farrakhan

WASHINGTON (AP): For Barack Obama, it is an ember that he has doused time and again, only to see it flicker anew: links to Islam fanned by false rumors, innuendo and association.
The Democratic presidential front-runner and his campaign reacted strongly this week when a photo of him in Kenyan tribal garb began spreading on the Internet. And the praise he received Sunday from Minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of the black Muslim group Nation of Islam, prompted pointed questions during Tuesday night’s presidential debate and in a private meeting over the weekend with Jewish leaders in Cleveland, Ohio.

During the debate, Obama repeated his denunciation of Farrakhan’s views, which have included numerous anti-Semitic comments. And, after being pressed, he rejected Farrakhan’s support in the presidential race.

The Democratic candidate says repeatedly that he is a Christian who took the oath of office on a family Bible. Yet on the Internet and on talk radio, and in a campaign introduction for Republican candidate John McCain this week, he often is depicted, falsely, as a Muslim with shadowy ties and his middle name, Hussein, is emphasized.

“If anyone is still puzzled about the facts, in fact I have never been a Muslim,” he told the Jewish leaders in Cleveland, according to a transcript of the private session.

The photo of Obama wearing Kenyan tribal raiment, taken by an Associated Press photographer during his 2006 visit to the country where his father was born, resurfaced on the Internet amid unsubstantiated claims that it was being circulated by members of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign.

Clinton and her aides said they had nothing to do with it. The Obama campaign accused them of “shameful, offensive fear-mongering.”

On Tuesday McCain denounced the introduction he got in Cincinnati that criticized Obama in vivid terms. Talk show host Bill Cunningham referred to Obama three times as “Barack Hussein Obama” and called him a “hack, Chicago-style” politician during Cunningham’s introduction of McCain.

The Obama campaign is closely attuned to the rumors and insinuations. Information on Obama’s Christian faith is prominently available on the “Know the facts” page of his Web site. The campaign has distributed flyers to churches in states with presidential contests. It encourages supporters to flag any attack that may make its way into cyberspace.

“Our campaign is vigilant in quickly responding to any information about Senator Obama that surfaces, be it on the Internet, in the media or from our opponents,” spokesman Bill Burton said Wednesday.

If there is confusion - and opportunity for political mischief - it derives at least in part from Obama’s rich cultural background. His mother was a white woman from Kansas, his father was Kenyan, and he spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, a largely Muslim country.

“My grandfather, who was Kenyan, converted to Christianity, then converted to Islam,” Obama said Sunday. “My father never practiced; he was basically agnostic. So, other than my name and the fact that I lived in a populous Muslim country for four years when I was a child, I have very little connection to the Islamic religion.”

Obama has become careful in denouncing the links, lately noting that some rumors about him also have been insulting to Muslims. Jim Zogby, founder and president of the Arab American Institute, said many Arab Americans are drawn to Obama because of his cultural background.

“It is clear he wants to have a broader relationship with the Muslim world,” Zogby said. “He has a biography that connects him to the Muslim world.”

Obama, though in the presidential limelight now for more than a year, is still introducing himself to voters. An AP-Yahoo poll in January asked people to volunteer the first few words that came to mind about each of the candidates, and 4 percent of the respondents unprompted, mentioned the word Muslim when describing Obama.
