Nearly 230 killed in Iraq clashes: AFP tally
BAGHDAD, March 29 (AFP):
Almost 230 people have been killed in Iraq since fierce clashes between militants and Iraqi troops broke out five days ago, according to an AFP tally based on reports by security officials. Unconfirmed reports put the death toll much higher. Fighting has raged since Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Tuesday ordered security forces to raid strongholds of militiamen mostly loyal to radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, in the port city of Basra. Subsequent street battles have left hundreds more wounded. Fighting was reported in some Basra neighbourhoods on Saturday for the fifth straight day, with at least 23 people killed since hostilities began, according to Iraqi security officials and aid organisations.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned Fitna movie
Muslim world denounces Dutch film portraying Islam as time bomb
The Associated Press , Amsterdam | Sat, 03/29/2008 5:09 PM | Headlines
A Dutch legislator’s film that portrays Islam as a ticking time bomb aimed at Western democracy
prompted denunciations from Muslim capitals and street protests in Pakistan, but a restrained reaction from Dutch Muslims who had expected worse.
The 15-minute film entitled “Fitna,” an Arabic word meaning”ordeal,” by anti-immigrant politician Geert Wilders was posted on a Web site late Thursday.
Friday, the site LiveLeak.com removed the film, citing threats to its staff “of a very serious nature,” but it has since been widely dispersed on file-sharing sites.
Employing elements and symbols calculated to offend Muslims, Fitna draws on well-worn footage of terrorist attacks and anti-Western, anti-Jewish rhetoric that was meant to alarm the
native Dutch.
Hundreds of Muslims demonstrated in Pakistan. The Foreign Ministry summoned the Dutch ambassador to deliver an official complaint against what it called a “defamatory film which deeply offended the sentiments of Muslims all over the world.”
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned the movie. “There is no justification for hate speech or incitement to violence. The right of free expression is not at stake here,” he said in a
statement released in New York.
“The real fault line is not between Muslim and Western societies, as some would have us believe, but between small minorities of extremists, on different sides, with a vested interest
in stirring hostility and conflict,” the U.N. chief said.
Condemnations also came from the government of Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, Iran and Jordan.
“It is not Islam that should be stopped, it is fear-mongers like Geert Wilders who should be stopped from spreading their hatred,” said Zakaria al-Sheik of the Rassoul Allah Yajmana, a Jordanian group formed to protect the image of Islam.
The Council of Europe said the film was a “distasteful manipulation” that exploits fear. The World Council of Churches said it failed to distinguish extremism from mainstream Islam.
“Extremism is a problem for most religions and needs to be countered through inter-religious dialogue,” said Rev. Dr. Shanta Premawrdhana…[..]

The film was released this evening on Wilders’ party homepage. The film shows Westergaards cartoon, Mohammad with a bomb in his turban.

Condemnation builds of Dutch anti-Islam film
Condemnation builds of Dutch anti-Islam film
THE HAGUE, March 28 (AFP) -
Muslim countries warned Friday of strong reactions to an anti-Islam film posted Thursday on the Internet by far-right Dutch deputy Geert Wilders. Iran said the film showed some Westerners waging a “vendetta” against Islam, and warning of unspecified repercussions. Bangladesh said the film could have “grave consequences”, while a coalition of Jordanian media said it would sue Wilders and launch a campaign to boycott Dutch products. The European Union’s Slovenian presidency also attacked the film, saying it served “no other purpose than inflaming hatred.” But Muslim leaders in The Netherlands called at a joint press conference for their co-religionists in other countries not to over-react. On Thursday the Dutch government was quick to say it regretted that the film finally aired, despite calls on Wilders to reconsider. The government said the public prosecutor’s office was investigating the film to see if it broke any laws.

Copyright infringement using Danish cartoon in Wilders anti-Quran film
Danish creator of Muhammad cartoon to sue Dutch filmmaker
The Associated Press , Copenhagen | Fri, 03/28/2008 4:37 PM
The Danish Union of Journalists says it will sue Dutch filmmaker Geert Wilders for copyright infringement for using a Danish cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad in his anti-Quran film.
The union says it will file a lawsuit on behalf of Kurt Westergaard, the cartoonist who made the controversial drawing depicting Islam’s prophet wearing a turban shaped like a bomb.
The union said Friday that Westergaard did not give Wilders permission to use the cartoon in his film, which it called “political propaganda.”
Wilders’ film sets verses of the Quran against a background of images from terrorist attacks.
It was not immediately clear whether the lawsuit would be filed in the Netherlands or Denmark.

Man gets 25 years in jail for microwaving baby
A has jury sentenced a young father to 25 years in prison for severely burning his infant daughter after putting her in a microwave and turning it on for up to 20 seconds.
Mauldin at first told police his daughter had been sunburned The jury had convicted Joshua Mauldin on injuring the child, rejecting his claims that he was insane when he put his daughter Ana in the microwave last year.
Prosecutors had wanted him sentenced to the maximum of life in prison.
Galveston County prosecutor Xochitl Vandiver said she was satisfied with the sentence.
“It’s extremely important for people to know that just because this case was sensational, it doesn’t mean that (child abuse) goes away,” she said.
“Child abuse is an important issue. It should be focused on.”
Sam Cammack III, Mauldin’s attorney, had asked jurors to consider his client’s long history of mental illness and sentence him to probation so he could be treated at a hospital.
“He still doesn’t get the treatment for mental illness that he needs,” Mr Cammack said. “He’s not going to get that in prison.”

“Lynx will be the Greatest Ride Off Earth,’” said XCOR test pilot

A small California aerospace company today unveiled a new suborbital spaceship that will provide affordable front-seat rides to the edge of space for the millions of people who want to buy a ticket. The company, XCOR Aerospace, of Mojave, CA, announced that its two-seat Lynx suborbital spaceship will carry people or payloads to where they will experience weightlessness and see the stars above and the Earth and its atmosphere below. This will launch XCOR into the emerging space tourism market, estimated at over a half-billion dollars.
The Lynx will offer affordable access to space for individuals, researchers and educators,” said XCOR CEO Jeff Greason. “Future versions of Lynx will offer ever-improving capabilities for scientific and engineering research and commercial applications.

The spaceship, roughly the size of a small private airplane, will first take off in 2010 and will be capable of flying several times each day.
“We have designed this vehicle to operate much like a commercial aircraft. Its liquid fuel engines will provide the enhanced safety, durability, reliability and maintainability that keep operating costs low,” Greason said. “These engines will also minimize the impact of these flights on the environment,” Greason added. “They are fully reusable, burn cleanly, and release fewer particulates than solid fuel or hybrid rocket motors.”
“Lynx will be the Greatest Ride Off Earth,’” said XCOR test pilot, former pilot astronaut and Space Shuttle commander, Col. Rick Searfoss (USAF-Ret.). “The acceleration, the weightlessness, and the view will provide you with an experience that is out of this world. And the best part of it all is that you’ll ride right up front, like a co-pilot, instead of in back, like cargo.”
XCOR has nine years’ experience developing reliable, reusable and non-toxic rocket propulsion systems and has already built and flown two different rocket-powered vehicles. The firm designed, built and flew a rocket propulsion system on its record-setting EZ-Rocket aircraft. The XCOR team then developed a more powerful engine with an advanced pump-fed fuel system for a larger aircraft now being flight-tested for a commercial customer.
“The Lynx builds on our track record in rocket-powered vehicles,” Greason said. “By addressing profitable near-term markets, the Lynx will strengthen the financial and technical foundation for increasingly capable future spaceships for suborbital and orbital markets.”
“XCOR’s mission is to radically lower the cost of spaceflight, because affordable access to space for everyone means far more than breathtaking views and the freedom of weightlessness,” said Greason. “It means unlocking the material and energy resources and economic opportunities of our solar system for our children.”
XCOR Aerospace is a California corporation located in Mojave, California. The company is in the business of developing and producing safe, reliable and reusable rocket engines, rocket propulsion systems, and rocket powered vehicles.
