Der Spitzelskandal bei der Deutschen Telekom nimmt immer größere Ausmaße an: Gerade hat der Aufsichtsrat Telekom-Chef Obermann den Rücken gestärkt, da werden bereits neue Vorwürfe laut: Bereits in der Ära von Ron Sommer sollen Journalisten systematisch bespitzelt worden sein.
Die Deutsche Telekom soll nach einem Medienbericht viel früher als bisher bekannt Spitzelaufträge erteilt haben, um Informanten aus dem Konzern auf die Schliche zu kommen. Wie die Financial Times Deutschland (FTD) berichtet, erteilte das Unternehmen dazu bereits im Jahr 2000 Aufträge.

Diesen Spitzelauftrag 2000 habe ein Mitarbeiter vergeben, der später zum Leiter der Telekom-Konzernsicherheit aufgestiegen sei. Unklar ist nach Angaben der Zeitung aber, in wessen Auftrag er gehandelt habe. Vorstandschef war damals Ron Sommer.

Für den Spitzelauftrag 2000 wurde nach Informationen der Zeitung die Berliner Control Risks Group (CRG) als Partner gewählt. “Wir haben dazu nichts in unseren Unterlagen gefunden. Wenn es so gewesen sein sollte, wäre das ein klarer Verstoß gegen sämtliche internen Ethikrichtlinien”, sagte Jürgen Stephan, seit 2003 CRG-Geschäftsführer.

Die gesamte Abteilung Corporate Investigations sei Anfang des Jahrzehnts ausgetauscht worden. Control Risks habe interne Untersuchungen eingeleitet und nehme die Vorwürfe sehr ernst, sagte Stephan laut Angaben der FTD.

Private Fahnder mit versteckter Kamera

Nach weiteren Angaben des Blattes suchte das Subunternehmen für den ehemaligen Staatskonzern die von Ex-Geheimdienstlern gegründete Berliner Wirtschaftsdetektei Desa nach einem Leck bei der Telekom. Im Visier habe dabei unter anderem ein Reporter der FTD gestanden. Ein Konzernsprecher sagte, der Fall sei dem Unternehmen nicht bekannt.

Portuguese police are investigating the possibility that the parents of Madeleine McCann were negligent when they left their daughter alone in their unlocked holiday apartment on the night she went missing.

According to the first published court ruling on the case, the investigation covers abduction, homicide, exposure or abandonment of a child, and concealment of a corpse.

The judgment, released by the Evora Supreme Court of Justice in Portimao, gives the first official glimpse into the course of the police inquiry, which has hitherto been guarded by Portugal’s strict judicial secrecy laws.

The reference to “abandonment” suggests that detectives are looking for evidence that Gerry and Kate McCann were negligent in leaving Madeleine and her twin 18-month-old siblings unsupervised while they ate dinner with friends on the evening she vanished.

Under Portuguese law, the crime of abandonment carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Mr and Mrs McCann, who are arguidos - or suspects - in their daughter’s disappearance, have repeatedly denied neglecting Madeleine, who was three when she vanished from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007.

Most of these demolitions occurred in the Jordan Valley and South Hebron areas. This trend, however, was discontinued in the following two months (as of 20 May), when only one structure was demolished.

South Africa protests approval of Microsoft file format as international standard

South Africa has lodged an appeal against the decision to make Microsoft Corp.’s Open XML format an internationally recognized standard for electronic documents, officials said Wednesday.

The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) sent a letter of protest to two Geneva-based organizations that held a worldwide ballot on Microsoft’s application last month, complaining that the process was poorly conducted and rushed.

SABS Chief Executive Martin Kuscus sent the letter to the International Standards Organization and the International Electrotechnical Commission. The letter is dated May 22.

“We challenge the validity of a process that, from beginning to end, required all parties to analyze far too much information in far too little time,” Kuscus said.

Supporters of the rival format ODF have claimed that Microsoft used strong-arm tactics to win approval from the national committees that voted on the new standard last month.

“It is our opinion that the process followed during all stages of this fast track has harmed the reputations of both ISO and IEC,” Kuscus said, adding that “negative publicity has, in turn, also harmed the reputation of all member bodies of ISO and IEC.”

The appeal means Microsoft will have to wait at least another month before knowing for sure whether the file format — known as OOXML — is approved as an open standard. Many lucrative government contracts require the use of open formats.

Microsoft argues that it has opened up the once-proprietary technology used by its Office 2007 software to work smoothly with competing programs. But opponents say OOXML still locks out competitors and gives Microsoft customers no choice but to keep buying its programs forever.

Microsoft declined to comment on the complaint Wednesday. “This is an issue between ISO/IEC and the South African member standards body, so it would not be appropriate for us to comment on this specific situation,” the Redmond-based software giant said in a statement.

IEC said South Africa’s was the only appeal it had received to date, but that other countries have until May 31 to follow suit.

“We have the procedures and the processes in place to deal with the appeal,” IEC spokesman Jonathan Buck said.

“The onus is on the member making the appeal to come up with the solution to move the matter forward,” he said. (****)

Landmark cluster bomb ban agreed by 111 countries

Delegates from 111 nations on Wednesday agreed on a landmark treaty to ban cluster bombs, Ireland’s foreign ministry said, in a deal that lacks the backing of major producers and stockpilers of the lethal weapons. After 10 days of painstaking negotiations in Dublin, diplomats agreed on the wording of a wide-ranging pact to outlaw the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions by its signatories. It also provides for the welfare of victims and the clearing of areas contaminated by unexploded cluster bombs. The agreement will be formally adopted on Friday, and signed in Oslo on December 2-3. Signatories would then need to ratify it.

Für den Grand Prix selbst schlägt Bohlen ein neues Abstimmungsverfahren vor: “Es kann doch nicht sein, dass Zwergen-Länder wie Andorra und San Marino die gleiche Stimme haben wie Deutschland und Russland.” Die Bewertung der Songs durch eine unabhängige Jury lehnt Bohlen aber ab: “Die Leute haben Spaß, wenn sie selbst anrufen und abstimmen können.”

Microsoft Windows 7 wandert ab 2010 auf den Computer

Die nächste Windows-Generation “Windows 7″ erreicht letzten Informationen von Microsoft zufolge bereits 2010 den Handel. Dies hat das Unternehmen offiziell angekündigt. Allerdings ist der konkrete Termin davon abhängig, wie gut die Software bis dahin tatsächlich entwickelt ist und ob sie den internen Qualitätansprüchen genügt. Microsoft scheint sich damit stärker der Auffassung einiger OpenSource-Entwickler anzunähern, die aufgrund des geringeren kommerziellen Drucks schon lange nach dem Motto verfahren “es ist fertig, wenn es fertig ist”.

Wie der Inquirer berichtet, soll Windows 7 in zwei Versionen für Desktop-PCs und Server erscheinen, die entsprechend als 32-Bit- und 64-Bit-Variante bereitgestellt werden. Erste Screenshots von Windows 7 sind ebenfalls schon im Internet aufgetaucht. Sie weisen klare Ähnlichkeit mit Windows Vista vor, doch sind dennoch zahlreiche neue Konzepte vor allem zur Bedienung der Oberfläche hinzugekommen.

Am frühen Montagmorgen ist die amerikanische Marssonde Phoenix ohne grössere Probleme und offenbar intakt in der Arktis des roten Planeten gelandet. Programmgemäss schickte sie bereits nach zwei Stunden erste Bilder von der Marsoberfläche zur Erde.

Nach fünf Jahren Arbeit und einer fast zehnmonatigen Reise durchs All ist die Anfang August 2007 gestartete Sonde Phoenix der amerikanischen Raumfahrtagentur Nasa am Montag früh wie geplant im hohen Norden des Mars gelandet. Kurz vor 2 Uhr morgens MESZ erhielten die Wissenschafter in Pasadena, Kalifornien, laut der Nasa die ersten Radiosignale von der Marssonde. Diese zeigten, dass die Sonde ihre 15 Minuten zuvor erfolgte Landung ohne Schäden überstanden hatte. Die Signale hatten eine Viertelstunde benötigt, bis sie mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit vom Mars zur Erde gelangt waren.
