Lebanon: Attack on military bus kills 6 in Tripoli
Six killed in Lebanon army bus blast TRIPOLI, Lebanon: At least six people were killed on Monday in a blast targeting a military bus on the outskirts of the northern Lebanese port city of Tripoli, a security official said. There were about 24 passengers on board. ‘We have at least six people killed, three of them soldiers,’ the official said. ‘We have about 30 other people injured.’ He said the bomb went off at the southern entrance of the city as the mini-bus was heading towards the capital Beirut during morning rush-hour.
BBC poll:War on terror has failed to weaken Al-Qaeda
LONDON: Most people across the world believe the US-led ‘war on terror’ has failed to weaken Al-Qaeda and many think the group has actually grown stronger, a BBC World Service poll revealed Monday, according to AFP. Seven years after the United States launched its campaign following the September 11 attacks, even Americans appear unsure about its success.
Afghanistan: 9 French soldiers injured in rocket attack
PARIS: Nine French soldiers were injured in a weekend clash with up to 20 Afghan insurgents northeast of Kabul, the French Armed Forces said on Sunday. The soldiers were hit by rocket debris or bullets in the Saturday clash in Kapissa province, according to Armed Forces spokesman Christophe Prazuck in Paris and spokesman Lt Col Bruno Louisfert in Kabul.
Afghanistan: Suicide bomber on a motorbike kills six
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan: A suicide bomber on a motorbike blew himself up near two police vehicles in a border town in southern Afghanistan Sunday, killing six people and wounding 17, police said. The evening rush hour blast in Spin Boldak, on the border with Pakistan, was the latest in a series of attacks on police there by the extremist Taliban who have been waging an insurgency for nearly seven years. The bomber blew himself up near two police vehicles on patrol, Kandahar province police chief Matiullah Khan Qate said.
Israel: US provides advanced missile shield
JERUSALEM: Israel has received an advanced US-made radar, staffed by American personnel, as part of preparations to fend off any future ballistic missile attack by Iran, officials involved in the deployment said on Sunday. (more…)
Pakistan: Polish engineer kidnapped, 3 killed
ISLAMABAD: Gunmen on Sunday kidnapped a Polish engineer in northern Pakistan, and shot dead his two drivers and a security guard during the abduction, police said. The kidnapping took place near the village of Pind Sultani in Attack district of Punjab province, about 110 kilometres (68 miles) northeast of Islamabad, police said.

Valentino Rossi macht achten MotoGP-WM-Titel perfekt
Valentino Rossi ist zum achten Mal Motorrad-Weltmeister. Der Italiener sicherte sich am Sonntag beim Großen Preis von Japan in Motegi mit seinem neunten Saisonsieg den Titel im MotoGP. Der Yamaha-Pilot ist damit bereits sechsmal Titelträger in der “Königsklasse”, in der er mittlerweile auf 70 Siege verweisen kann.
Rossi verwies in Motegi den nunmehr entthronten Titelverteidiger Casey Stoner aus Australien auf Ducati und den Spanier Daniel Pedrosa auf Honda auf die Plätze.

Der zweifache Oscar-Preisträger Paul Newman ist im Alter von 83 Jahren an Lungenkrebs gestorben. Das berichteten die von dem Schauspieler gegründeten Stiftungen in den USA und Italien am Samstag. “Unser Freund Paul Newman wird uns fehlen. Aber wir hatten das Glück, diesen bemerkenswerten Menschen kennenzulernen”, hieß es in der Erklärung. (more…)
