GAZA: A Hamas policeman was killed and three others were wounded when an explosive device went off in a police station in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, a spokesman for the force said.
Hamas police spokesman Islam Shahwan said the device was found earlier in the day in the Hamas-controlled territory and was taken to the police station to be dismantled. While security men were taking the bomb apart, it exploded, causing several secondary blasts, Shahwan said. It was not immediately clear where the explosive device was found and why it had been taken inside the police station instead of being detonated outside.

An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Gaza’s Islamist rulers has been in place since June. But internal tensions, between Hamas and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s secular Fatah faction, remain high. Hamas seized control of the coastal strip last year after routing Abbas’s forces.

Accordingt to Reuters, earlier on Thursday, Hamas released 17 jailed Fatah members, saying it set them free as a goodwill gesture before reconciliation talks between the rivals in Cairo on Nov. 9.

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope is back in business. Just a couple of days after the orbiting observatory was brought back online, Hubble aimed its prime working camera, the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), at a particularly intriguing target, a pair of gravitationally interacting galaxies called Arp 147. The image demonstrated that the camera is working exactly as it was before going offline, thereby scoring a “perfect 10″ both for performance and beauty.

The two galaxies happen to be oriented so that they appear to mark the number 10. The left-most galaxy, or the “one” in this image, is relatively undisturbed apart from a smooth ring of starlight. It appears nearly on edge to our line of sight. The right-most galaxy, resembling a zero, exhibits a clumpy, blue ring of intense star formation.

The blue ring was most probably formed after the galaxy on the left passed through the galaxy on the right. Just as a pebble thrown into a pond creates an outwardly moving circular wave, a propagating density wave was generated at the point of impact and spread outward. As this density wave collided with material in the target galaxy that was moving inward due to the gravitational pull of the two galaxies, shocks and dense gas were produced, stimulating star formation.

The dusty reddish knot at the lower left of the blue ring probably marks the location of the original nucleus of the galaxy that was hit.

Arp 147 appears in the Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies, compiled by Halton Arp in the 1960s and published in 1966. This picture was assembled from WFPC2 images taken with three separate filters. The blue, visible-light, and infrared filters are represented by the colors blue, green, and red, respectively.

The galaxy pair was photographed on October 27-28, 2008. Arp 147 lies in the constellation Cetus, and it is more than 400 million light-years away from Earth.

Beckham überbrückt die Spielpause in der US-amerikanischen Profiliga (MLS) beim italienischen Traditionsclub. Dort will sich der im fernen Amerika “vergessene” Beckham zurück in die englische Nationalmannschaft schießen.

Beckhams Engagement soll nur etwas mehr als zwei Monate dauern. Der Brite wird  zeitgerecht wieder nach Los Angeles zurückkehren, um sich mit Galaxy auf die Ende März startende Major-League-Soccer-Saison vorzubereiten. Milan gab weiters bekannt, dass man sich mit dem kalifornischen Verein auf eine Partnerschaft geeinigt habe.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Militants from the Gaza Strip fired a rocket into southern Israel on Thursday in violation of a ceasefire and Israel temporarily closed its borders with the Hamas-controlled territory in response, officials said.

The rocket landed near the city of Sderot but there were no casualties or damage, police said. Shortly after, Israel’s defense ministry ordered the closure of all border crossings with the Gaza Strip.

Defense officials did not say when they would be reopened.

The rocket fire came in violation of a June ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamist Hamas group. Hamas had agreed to halt rocket attacks in return for the gradual lifting of a blockade Israel imposed on the Gaza Strip two years ago.

The truce has largely held, though Palestinian militants have occasionally fired rockets into Israel, spurring the Jewish state to temporarily close its border with the coastal enclave.

Drei Jahre nach dem verheerenden Erdbeben im Norden Pakistans sind bei einem schweren Beben im Südwesten des Landes mehr als 160 Menschen getötet und Hunderte verletzt worden. Nach Angaben der Regierung der Provinz Baluchistan wurden mehr als 15.000 Menschen obdachlos. Das Beben der Stärke 6,4 auf der Richterskala überraschte die meisten Menschen im Schlaf. Familien flohen panisch aus den Häusern.

Das Epizentrum lag etwa 60 Kilometer nordöstlich der Provinzhauptstadt Quetta. Die Nationale Katastrophenschutzbehörde schickte Zelte, Decken und warme Kleidung in die betroffene Region.

Nach dem Beben gingen in der Provinz auch mehrere Schlammlawinen nieder. Baluchistan ist die größte, aber am dünnsten besiedelte Provinz Pakistans. Sie ist zugleich die ärmste Provinz des Landes.

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba: A US military judge barred the Pentagon Tuesday from using a Guantanamo prisoner’s confession to Afghan authorities as trial evidence, saying it was obtained through torture.

Army Col. Stephen Henley said Mohammed Jawad’s statements ‘were obtained by physical intimidation and threats of death which, under the circumstances, constitute torture.’ Jawad’s defence attorney, Air Force Maj. David Frakt, told The Associated Press that the ruling removes ‘the lynchpin of the government’s case.’

More than 100 people have been killed in an earthquake in southwestern Pakistan, Minister for Revenue and Rehabilitation Zamaruk Khan said. He said the government is preparing to provide food, shelter and medical care to survivors of Wednesday’s quake.

‘More than 100′ people have been killed so far, he said. Separately, a district offiial said at least 80 people were killed when the quake struck the region bringing down hundreds of mud-walled houses. The US Geological Survey said a 6.4 magnitude quake hit 60 km northeast of the city of Quetta before dawn.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department put the magnitude at 6.5 and said the quake struck at 05:10 a.m. ‘I’m telling you that 80 people are dead in this area where I am standing right now,’ Sohail-ur-Rehman, a top district administration official in Balochistan province told Dawn Television by telephone from Wam district.

Danach wurde sie 1.000 Kilometer weit in das Gefängnis von Sapporo gebracht, wo der Kläger lebt.
