Der Mitbegründer von Yahoo Inc. gibt seinen Posten als Chef des Unternehmens auf.

Der Chef und Gründer des US-Internetkonzerns Yahoo, Jerry Yang, hat seinen Rücktritt angekündigt. Nach Unternehmensangaben wird der Vorstandsvorsitzende sein Amt niederlegen, sobald ein Nachfolger gefunden worden ist. Das 40-jährige einstige Silicon-Valley-Wunderkind wird weiter für Yahoo arbeiten und auch seinen Sitz im Aufsichtsrat des Unternehmens behalten. Yang erklärte, dass die Zeit gekommen sei, die Führung des Unternehmens abzugeben. Er werde aber weiterhin alles dafür tun, dass Yahoo sein gesamtes Potenzial ausschöpfen und seine führende Position ausbauen könne.

Der aus Taiwan stammende Yang hatte das Unternehmen 1994 gemeinsam mit seinem Kommilitonen David Filo gegründet. Im Sommer vergangenen Jahres kehrte er an die Spitze des Konzerns zurück. Kritiker machen ihn für eine fehlgeschlagene Übernahme durch den US-Softwaregiganten Microsoft verantwortlich.

Microsoft hatte im Mai nach hartnäckigem Werben sein milliardenschweres Kaufangebot für Yahoo zurückgezogen. Zuletzt hatte der Software-Riese 47 Milliarden Dollar (knapp 30 Milliarden Euro) für Yahoo geboten, die Suchmaschine allein hätte sich Microsoft neun Milliarden Dollar kosten lassen.

Der Software-Hersteller Microsoft startet werbefinanziertes Videostreaming im deutschsprachigen Raum. Rund 100 Kinofilme, TV-Serien und Animationen seien auf dem Portal MSN kostenlos abrufbar, erklärte der Konzern am Montag in München.

Nutzer können sich die Filme per Streaming-Verfahren auf ihrem Computer ansehen und mit der entsprechenden Ausrüstung auch auf ihren Fernseher weiterleiten. Eine Registrierung ist für den Dienst nicht erforderlich. Das Angebot steht nur in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz zur Verfügung.

Microsoft plant, Sendungen alle zehn Minuten für maximal 90 Sekunden durch Werbung zu unterbrechen. Zudem werde vor Beginn des Films ein Spot gezeigt.

NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander has ceased communications after operating for more than five months. As anticipated, seasonal decline in sunshine at the robot’s arctic landing site is not providing enough sunlight for the solar arrays to collect the power necessary to charge batteries that operate the lander’s instruments.

Mission engineers last received a signal from the lander on Nov. 2. Phoenix, in addition to shorter daylight, has encountered a dustier sky, more clouds and colder temperatures as the northern Mars summer approaches autumn. The mission exceeded its planned operational life of three months to conduct and return science data.

The project team will be listening carefully during the next few weeks to hear if Phoenix revives and phones home. However, engineers now believe that is unlikely because of the worsening weather conditions on Mars. The sender wants you to login at the address below and submit your payment informations.

Once you do that, the scammers have your Google Ads login and password and will steal your hard

erned $$$. The URLs in these scam mails do always link to a domain hosted in China (.cn) 

The subject of the mails are either “Please submit your payment information.” or

“Your payment didn’t succeed, so your ads have been suspended.”

Wenige Tage nach dem Neustart hat sich das “Hubble”-Weltraumteleskop mit einem schillernden Galaxienfoto zurückgemeldet. Es nahm dafür das Galaxienpaar Arp 147 im Sternbild Walfisch (Cetus) ins Visier, das - in astronomischen Maßstäben - vor kurzer Zeit eine kosmische Kollision durchlebt hat.  

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope is back in business. Just a couple of days after the orbiting observatory was brought back online, Hubble aimed its prime working camera, the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2), at a particularly intriguing target, a pair of gravitationally interacting galaxies called Arp 147. The image demonstrated that the camera is working exactly as it was before going offline, thereby scoring a “perfect 10″ both for performance and beauty.

The two galaxies happen to be oriented so that they appear to mark the number 10. The left-most galaxy, or the “one” in this image, is relatively undisturbed apart from a smooth ring of starlight. It appears nearly on edge to our line of sight. The right-most galaxy, resembling a zero, exhibits a clumpy, blue ring of intense star formation.

The blue ring was most probably formed after the galaxy on the left passed through the galaxy on the right. Just as a pebble thrown into a pond creates an outwardly moving circular wave, a propagating density wave was generated at the point of impact and spread outward. As this density wave collided with material in the target galaxy that was moving inward due to the gravitational pull of the two galaxies, shocks and dense gas were produced, stimulating star formation.

The dusty reddish knot at the lower left of the blue ring probably marks the location of the original nucleus of the galaxy that was hit.

Arp 147 appears in the Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies, compiled by Halton Arp in the 1960s and published in 1966. This picture was assembled from WFPC2 images taken with three separate filters. The blue, visible-light, and infrared filters are represented by the colors blue, green, and red, respectively.

The galaxy pair was photographed on October 27-28, 2008. Arp 147 lies in the constellation Cetus, and it is more than 400 million light-years away from Earth.

Microsoft hat mit einem Update außerhalb seiner Patchday-Reihe eine kritische Lücke in diversen Windows-Betriebssystemen gestopft. Der Fehler liegt im Serverdienst.

Das Update trägt die Microsoft-Nummer MS08-067: Das Leck sitzt laut Microsoft im RPC-Dienst (Remote Procedure Call). Sind Angreifern Details dazu bekannt, könnten sie unter Windows 2000, XP und Windows Server 2003 eigenen Code einspielen und ausführen.

“Wir vermuten, dass diese Sicherheitslücke bisher nur in sehr wenigen, gezielten Angriffen ausgenutzt wird”, erklärt Daniel Melanchthon, Technical Evangelist für Security und Messaging bei Microsoft Deutschland, in seinem Blog.

Wer den Patch noch nicht aufgespielt hat - auch Windows Vista und Server 2008 sind gefährdet, wenn auch nicht so stark wie die früheren Betriebssysteme - sollte dies laut Microsoft unbedingt tun. “Aufgrund der Schwere des Problems empfehlen wir allen Kunden dringend, diesen Patch schnellstmöglich einzuspielen. Allein die Tatsache, dass die Veröffentlichung außer der Reihe erfolgt, zeigt, wie kritisch dieser Patch ist”, so Melanchthon.

Die erste indische Mondsonde ist zu einer zweijährigen Mission ins Weltall gestartet. Die Trägerrakete PSLV mit der unbemannten Mondsonde Chandrayaan-1 hob planmäßig von der Raumbasis in Sriharikota ab. “Das ist ein historischer Augenblick. Wir haben unsere Reise zum Mond begonnen”, sagte der Präsident der indischen Raumfahrtorganisation ISRO, G. Madhavan Nair, unter dem Applaus der Ingenieure in Sriharikota. Die Sonde soll die Oberfläche des Mondes erkunden.

Im Wettbewerb mit den anderen asiatischen Großmächten ist Indien nach China und Japan das dritte Land, das eine Sonde zum Mond schickt. Die unbemannte Mission soll mit 80 Millionen Dollar Kosten die bisher billigste werden. Seit Oktober 2007 kreist die japanische Sonde “Kaguya” um den Mond, einen Monat später folgte das chinesische Raumfahrtzeug “Chang’e-1″. Daneben haben nur die USA, Russland und die Europäische Raumfahrtbehörde ESA schon Sonden zum Mond geschickt. Für 2011 plant Indien die Landung eines Fahrzeugs auf dem Mond, später soll eventuell auch ein Astronaut ins All gebracht werden.

Indien plant bis 2013 insgesamt 60 Weltraummissionen, darunter zum Mond und zum Mars. Der Subkontinent will auch einen heimischen Astronauten ins All schicken. Die Mission der Sonde Chandrayaan-1 soll 2010 und 2012 wiederholt werden.
