Bei der gestrigen TV-Elefantenrunde der 5 Spitzenkandidaten für die Parlamentswahlen am kommenden Sonntag, wurde schon während der Sendung klar: mit  Argumenten und Auftreten am meisten überzeugen konnte wohl der Sozialist Werner Faymann.

ISLAMABAD: A senior US military official has acknowledged that American forces conducted a raid inside Pakistan, in the first known foreign ground assault in the country against a suspected Taliban haven.
The Pakistan government has condemned an incursion that killed at least 20 people.
The American official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that the raid occurred Wednesday on Pakistani soil about one 1 milefrom the Afghan border. The official didn’t provide any other details.

Screenshots of the new Eidos Batman game Batman: Arkham Asylum showed up on developer Rocksteady Games website, only to be taken down relatively quickly. Not quickly enough, apparently, as NeoGAF member Endless managed to collect the whole set, which we now present for your viewing pleasure. Very nice looking screens, a bit reminiscent of Starbreeze’s The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Hell, if you replaced Riddick with Batman and tossed the Joker into that game you’d have the best Batman game ever.

Magnus Gäfgen (33) ist vor dem Europäischen Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte gescheitert. Der Mörder des Bankierssohnes Jakob von Metzler (†11) wollte seinen Fall noch einmal aufrollen lassen, ihm war 2002 im Polizeiverhör Folter angedroht worden, um eine Aussage zu erzwingen.

Seine Grundrechtsbeschwerde wurde heute abgewiesen. Deutschland habe weder gegen das Folterverbot noch gegen das Recht auf ein faires Verfahren verstoßen, hieß es in dem Urteil am Montag in Straßburg.

Gäfgen hatte den kleinen Jakob aus Frankfurt im September 2002 ermordet. Drei Tage später wurde er nach der Lösegeldübergabe festgenommen und hatte der Polizei zunächst die Unwahrheit über sein Versteck für das Kind gesagt.

Gäfgen ist rechtskräftig zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt. Er war dagegen bis vor das Bundesverfassungsgericht gezogen, hatte aber keinen Erfolg. Danach legte er in Straßburg Beschwerde ein. Gäfgens Anwalt Michael Heuchemer hatte beantragt, Deutschland wegen Verletzung des Folterverbots und Verletzung des fairen Verfahrens zu verurteilen.

Facebook Now Allows Jewish Settlers In West Bank to List Israel, Not ‘Palestine,’ as Home

Facebook, which unwittingly had dropped itself smack in the middle of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, reversed itself Monday and now is allowing Jewish settlers in the West Bank to list themselves as residents of Israel, not a country called "Palestine."

Users of the social networking Web site who live in Maale Adumim, Ariel and other large Jewish settlements in the West Bank protested when Facebook automatically listed "Palestine" as their hometown, the Jerusalem Post reported.

A settlers group accused the California-based company of having a political agenda.

"I was surprised and disappointed to find that my hometown of Ariel is listed in Facebook as being part of a country called ‘Palestine,"’ Ari Zimmerman wrote in a posting on Facebook, Reuters reported. "I am a citizen of Israel, as are all of the other residents of Ariel. We do not live in ‘Palestine,’ nor does anyone else."

Brandee Barker, Facebook’s director of communications, said users in major settlements now can choose between Israel or "Palestine" as their permanent residence.

"We also offer Hebron in both Israel and Palestine," Barker told Reuters, referring to the major West Bank city that is home to about 150,000 Palestinians and 400 Jewish settlers.

Palestinian users reportedly have set up their own Facebook group whose members threatened to cancel their accounts if "Palestine" was removed from the site. Called "If Palestine is removed from Facebook, I am closing my account," the group claims it has over 4,700 members…[…]

Of note this week

Gaza Strip:
· Eleven Palestinians, including three who were on picnic east of Beit Hanun, were killed and five injured by the IDF.
· Six demonstrations and two sit-ins took place in various parts of the Gaza Strip, including five to protest against the siege.
· The IDF carried out three leveling and excavation operations in the Central Gaza and Rafah governorates.
· The Palestinian Popular Committee against the Siege organised a human chain of about 13,000 people on 25 February to protest against the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip. The chain extended from Rafah to Beit Hanun along Salah Ed-Din road.
· 42 rockets and 26 mortars were fired towards Israel, resulting in the injury of one Israeli woman and two children.

West Bank:
· Twenty-one Palestinians were injured by the IDF, all in the northern West Bank.
· 22 February: A prisoner affiliated with Hamas died while in PA custody. The PA claimed that the prisoner died of an underlying medical condition (Ramallah).
· 21 February: Seventeen gas stations in Bethlehem Governorate closed down to protest against a decision by the Israeli authorities to transfer the fuel filing point from the village of Al Khader (Bethlehem) to Tarqumiya (Hebron).
· The IDF distributed 12 orders for the demolition of houses and other structures in the Qalqiliya governorate. In addition, the IDF occupied five houses in the Nablus, Bethlehem and Hebron governorates.
· The IDF handed over a confiscation and closure order stating that the Islamic Charitable Society in Hebron City is an illegal organisation affiliated with Hamas and stipulating the confiscation of the contents and land of a number of establishments owned by the Society (including shops, warehouses and a school under construction) in Hebron City as well as their closure for three years to be effective on 1 April 2008.
· 23 February: The IDF issued military order number (T/183/5) for the requisition of 766 dunums of land from the towns of Dura, Adh Dhahiriya and Ar Ramadeen for the purpose of Barrier construction. 2,400 additional dunums will be isolated behind the Barrier.
· 22 curfew hours, 83 flying checkpoints, 105 IDF search operations and 121 arrests were reported.

Misslungene VW-Werbekampagne  - Ein Volk, ein Wagen

“One nation, one car” - so ist es derzeit auf den Wagen der Züricher Verkehrsbetriebe zu lesen. Die Neue Zürcher Zeitung assoziiert damit “Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer” und will, dass der Schriftzug entfernt wird.

Ich glaube da spinnen ein paar, wie kann man den Henry Ford Spruch “One nation, one car” mit dem Nazi Schlagwort verbinden? Etwas weit hergeholt, oder wird jetzt Volk zum Unwort und die Autohersteller Ford und VW  zu Entschädigungszahlungen verurteilt fragt sich Vercingetortix. Ich vermute mal der gute Kolumnist hat Verwandte in Tel Aviv.

Es soll ja bekanntlich nicht alles schlecht im Dritten Reich gewesen sein, jedem wurde ein eigenes Auto versprochen. Vor lauter Begeisterung versammelten sich die potentiellen Kunden unter dem Banner “Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer!” Daran fühlt sich jetzt die Neue Zürcher Zeitung erinnert, denn VW wirbt auf den Wagen der Zürcher Verkehrsbetriebe traditionsbewusst mit dem Slogan “One nation, one car” (Ein Volk, ein Wagen).

Als Urheber dieses Satzes gilt zwar Henry Ford, der ebenfalls ein ganzes Volk mit Autos beglücken wollte; nebenbei war er bekennender Antisemit. Die NZZ aber hält die VW-Werbung für eine “dumme Anmaßung” und empfiehlt VW, sie möglichst rasch zu entfernen.

Vorwahl in Texas: Clinton-Team wirft Obama-Anhängern Betrug vor

Jetzt wird es schmutzig: Ein Wahlkampfmanager von Hillary Clinton beschuldigt Obama-Anhänger, potentielle Wähler der Senatorin von Wahlversammlungen ausgeschlossen zu haben. Obamas Sprecher nannte die Vorwürfe lächerlich. Dies berichtet die Suedeutsche Zeitung heute in ihrem Auslandsartikel.

Obama Betrugsversuch bei den Wahlversammlungen der Demokraten in Texas vorgeworfen. In einer eilig anberaumten Telefon-Konferenz mit Journalisten beschuldigte Clintons Texas-Wahlkampfchef Ace Smith die Gegenseite am Dienstagabend, in dem US-Bundesstaat zu “skandalösen und undemokratischen Tricks” zu greifen.In einigen Wahllokalen hätten Obama-Wähler den Anhängern Clintons den Zugang zu den Wahlversammlungen (Caucuses) verwehrt: “Obama-Anhänger haben die Wahlversammlungen übernommen und Clinton-Anhänger ausgeschlossen, die eigentlich Recht auf Zugang hatten.”

Clintons Rechtsberaterin Lyn Utrecht sagte, von manchen Caucus-Treffpunkten seien bereits Abstimmungsergebnisse an die Auszählzentralen übermittelt worden, ehe die Wahlversammlungen überhaupt angefangen hätten. Das Clinton-Team behalte sich juristische Schritte vor, sagte sie. Eine Entscheidung darüber sei noch nicht gefällt worden.
